GARAGE DOOR OPENERS
The four types of garage door openers:
Belt drive: Very quiet, reliable and long-lasting performance and boasts some of the more advanced security features. This operation slows down for starts and stops. It’s the best garage door opener available today.
Screw drive: Slower than and not as quiet as the belt drive, a screw drive opener has the upside that it requires the least maintenance. This is due to the fact that it is very powerful and has few garage door parts that move.
Chain drive: The opening and closing operation is powered by a metal chain, making it a bit noisy. Yet, it is the most common type used because chain drives are cost-effective, reliable and work well in different climates.
Jack shaft: There are some garages with low, obstructed, or cathedral ceilings in which traditional openers won’t fit. This is where jack shaft comes in. Its design is also perfect for overhead storage.

GARAGE DOOR SPRINGS
There are torsion springs and extension springs. The main differences between the two are in cost and durability. Torsion springs do cost more, but they’re sturdier and they last longer (up to double the life span of extension springs). For example, if you open your garage door 4 times a day, extension springs will last about 7 years, while torsion springs will last 10-14 years.
You can spot the differences like so: (1) Torsion springs are above your garage door, while extension springs are located along its sides (2) torsion springs end in metal pieces called cones, while extension springs end in loops and (3) torsion springs are connected to a metal tube, while extension springs are connected to pulleys.

GARAGE DOOR PULLEYS
Extension spring doors have four pulleys: two pulleys with pulley forks attached to the springs on either side of the horizontal track and two stationary pulleys mounted on the horizontal track in front of the radius track. A replacement pulley kit ordinarily consists of: the sheave, strap and fasteners, and the pulleys which come in sizes of 3, 4 and 5½ inches. Replacing the pulleys prevents cable wear and helps the door open and close much more smoothly.

GARAGE DOOR CABLES
The type of garage door cables you’ll need depends on the spring system you have (torsion vs. extension). If your garage is set up with torsion springs, then there are torsion spring cables that loop at one end and are crimped at the other. These cables must be secured and wound in a particular way. If your garage is set up with extension springs (the ones that run along either side of your garage door), these springs, of course, require particular extension spring cables. There are also safety cables that are used with extension springs, running through the center of the springs to prevent any damage or injury if the spring were to snap.

GARAGE DOOR HINGES
Hinges change depending on the dimensions of the garage door and if it is equipped with windows or with all-windowed panoramic sections. Hinges are almost always identified with a numbered stamp (1 to 10). This indicates their installation location on the garage door. Hinge quality is measured by the thickness of the steel, which is measured in gauge: the lower the number, the thicker the steel. Order hinges with a thickness of at least 14 gauge for a residential door.
