The city of Evanston has accumulated many different nicknames. In the 1920s it was known as “The City of Homes” thanks to its prominent mansions. It has also been known as “The people’s republic of Evanston” since the late 1900s due to its left of center politics and activism. In the early 1900s, Evanston was known as “The City of Churches” and “Heavanston”. Finally, as the city sits next to Skokie, it is also known as “Skevanston”.

In 2015, Evanston was named the Capital of the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour. In 2016, the city was a finalist in the competition.
