Other interesting pieces of information

Alsip was named after Frank Alsip who owned a brickyard that opened in 1885. Settled by Dutch and German farmers, Alsip started to expand once the Tri-state Tollway was built back in 1959. When the interchange at 127th street and Cicero Avenue opened, the village began to expand even more. Thanks to the continued commercial growth, the city has one of Illinois’ most congested intersections.

Alsip’s population growth is thanks to cars that became popular in the 1950’s. They allowed people to travel further afield and discover this wonderful village. Since the 1950’s economic growth has been thanks to Oak Lawn, Worth, and Blue Island that are located nearby.

Alsip has a well-known ridge which the locals call “Blue Island”. It can be seen from the Beverley neighborhood from the north. The ridge reaches 50-60 feet above the lake bed and over 650 feet in total. The ridge tends to attract a lot of tourists during the summer months. If you would like to visit the ridge it’s worth visiting during the cooler months.

Clay that naturally occurs in the soil, especially around Lane’s Island is what let to the Alsip brickyard being established. The brickyard was run by Frank Alsip whom the village is named after.

In 1927, the village was home to a number of cemeteries. The locals wished to incorporate the village so that it didn’t become surrounded by even more cemeteries. However, there are 5 cemeteries on the village’s border and 3 in the village itself.
