Other interesting pieces of information
Afton Township gets its name from a poem by Robert Burns, a Scottish poet, and lyricist. The poem “Sweet Afton” is about a stream next to which Burns’ “Sweet Mary” fell asleep.
Afton is said to have very little history as there seems to have been no incidences in its past that should be remembered. Farms in Afton have been very profitable thanks to its very fertile soil. In fact, many of those who moved to Afton from other parts of the country noted that farmers in the surrounding areas failed to make as big a profit as the soil is not as fertile.
Previously attached to DeKalb and Clinton counties, Afton saw shanties erected in 1854 when 3 gentlemen broke up the land and with signatures from all 23 of its male residents, the area was made into a town.
Afton Township in DeKalb county might not be the largest Township in Illinois but it is home to some beautiful scenery ‘quiet’ history and friendly people.
